Mannum’s All Steamed Up Event to attract largest congregation of steam boats and blacksmiths!

Monday, November 12, 2018

Mannum is certainly getting all steamed up for their biennial celebration of boats, blacksmiths, engines and steam on 17 and 18 November.
Not only will there be the largest congregation of working blacksmiths in South Australia with an amazing 37 blacksmiths registered to date, Stray Dog Boat Works have set the challenge to make history to launch the largest congregation of mini steam boats!
Many of you would have met Ali and Robert Ayliffe at the Adelaide Show over the past nine years, where they run Stray Dog Boat Works ‘Build Your Own Boat’ experience for kids of all ages, up to 100 years.
For the first time they have chosen Mannum’s All Steamed Up Event to launch their ‘steam boat building kits’ and to create yet another milestone moment with 50 mini steam boats operating at the event.
Manager, Robert Ayliffe said, “The youngest kid to build a boat at the show was three years. If you are big enough to hold a hammer, you are big enough to build your very own boat.”
“These small boats come in kits, including masts and sails, with optional Organic battery powered motors.”

“There will be a special shipping launching tank, so you can show your boats making
steam, and possibly even racing. They make great popping sounds a well.”
There will be large and small steam traction engines and trucks operating and
another event first will be a 30m train track showcasing a seven and quarter gauge
mini ride on steam train display and a Wine, Art and Food Fest offering some of our
States best produce and creative works from our River region.
John McLellan, blacksmith from California will be special guest at the event. His work
takes you to a new dimension of this aged old art.
John will be holding master classes and demonstrations in conjunction with many
blacksmith volunteers from the SA Artist Blacksmith Association who are looking
forward to viewing his award winning work.
Mannum’s riverfront will come alive with classic, wooden and steam boats of all
shapes and sizes on display both on the water and land including the PS Industry
from Renmark, the PS Oscar W from Goolwa and Mannum’s PS Marion and PW
Mayflower to name a few.
This year there will be non-stop live entertainment at Mary Ann Reserve with the
South Australian Police Band and rock n roll band Silverados on Saturday and the
10th/27th Battalion of the Royal South Australian Regiment and regional band and
Badlands on Sunday.
“The grand old ladies of steam will be on show with the PS Oscar W from Goolwa,
the PS Industry from Renmark, the PS Marion and PW Mayflower from Mannum and
many other paddle, classic and wooden boats making their way from across the
State for the event” said Rob Bowring OAM, Chairman of the Mannum Dock
All Steamed Up is growing with so many displays and things to do for the whole
family and let’s not forget the launch of the replica Shearer Steam carriage on
Sunday at 1.00 p.m. Followed by the grand flotilla parade so keep the 17th and 18th
November free in your diary when Mannum will definitely be ‘All Steamed Up’.
