If you have a green thumb and enjoy planting vegies in the backyard, now is the time to try your luck at growing a giant pumpkin.

If you have a green thumb and enjoy planting vegies in the backyard, now is the time to try your luck at growing a giant pumpkin.

Cadell’s Murray River Giant Pumpkin Competition organisers have just released free seeds in Riverland and Murray regions and the Adelaide Hills outlets for these orange wonders which will amaze you as they grow to incredible sizes.

“Many of our past entrants have been backyard growers and the whole family gets involved”, said Jason Lukacs, Chairman of the Cadell Community and Tourism Association.

“Each Easter, our harvest festival comes alive with everything pumpkin and we hope to have record entrants in 2018”.

Giant pumpkins grow to amazing sizes all around the globe with the current world record holder Mathias Willemijns’ pumpkin weighing in at a massive 2624.6 pounds (1190.5 kg) at the Giant Pumpkin European Championship in Ludwigsburg, Germany in October last year.

“We have seen pumpkins of all shapes and sizes over the past years at the Cadell Harvest Festival and no-one has ever beaten the event record of 390kg as yet but we hope to see someone come close next Easter”, said Mayor Dave Burgess of the Mid Murray Council.

“People love coming to the festival to see the pumpkins and the stories the growers have behind them”.

“The Murray River Giant Pumpkin Competition now in its sixth year has become a must see at Cadell on Easter Saturday”, said Paul George, Managing Director, MGA Insurance.

“MGA Insurance is proud to again offer the first prize of a trip to the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival in the United States for the heaviest giant pumpkin over 300kg and if we do not reach this weight there will be a $1000 for the heaviest nearest to 300kg”.

“The Cadell Harvest Festival is constantly growing and offers more and more for the whole family each year”.
